Your business is only as strong as the systems underneath it.

Business Function: Foundation

Hey family. Welcome to Sitra Desk. I'm James Artis — most people who know me call me Jimmy A. I grew up in Milton, Delaware watching people I love work hard every single day without the right tools in their hands. I did the same thing when I started building businesses. This newsletter is what I wished I had back then. Glad you're here. Let's get to work.

Before we talk about growing your business, getting more customers, or making more money — we need to talk about what's underneath all of it. Your foundation. Because here is the truth nobody told us early enough.

Your business is only as strong as the systems underneath it.

Think about a house. You can paint it. Decorate it. Add a second floor. But if the foundation has cracks, everything you build on top of it is at risk. Your business works the same way.

Most small business owners are so deep in the day to day — serving customers, chasing invoices, managing everything alone — that they never stop to look at what's holding the whole thing up. And by the time something breaks, it costs twice as much to fix.

Your foundation has five core pieces. Every business runs on all five whether you know it or not.

01

Your Why

Why does this business exist and what problem does it solve? If you cannot answer this in one sentence you will make every decision harder than it needs to be.

02

Your Money

Do you know what comes in, what goes out, and what is left? Not roughly. Actually. Your numbers tell you the truth when everything else feels uncertain.

03

Your Operations

How does the work actually get done? Is it all in your head or does it live somewhere that can survive a bad week?

04

Your Customers

Who are you serving and how do you keep them coming back? A business without a clear customer is a business chasing everyone and reaching nobody.

05

Your Tools

What systems, software, or support do you have in place? You do not need everything. You need the right things working consistently.

You do not have to have all five perfectly. But you need to know where you stand on all five. That is how you stop guessing and start building.

Your action for today

Take out a piece of paper or open your notes app. Write down all five — Your Why, Your Money, Your Operations, Your Customers, Your Tools. Next to each one give yourself a simple grade. Strong. Needs Work. Or I Don't Know Yet.

Do not overthink it. Just be honest. That grade is your starting point. That is your foundation check. Hold onto that paper. We are going to work through every single one of these together in the issues ahead.
